Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) act as a digital critical friend in action research?
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming an invaluable tool in action research, particularly in educational contexts. This article examines how AI functions as a ‘critical friend’ throughout the action research process. Teacher-researchers can use AI to create environments that build trust, boost self-confidence, and encourage open-mindedness which are essential qualities for fostering critical thinking. Traditionally, the role of a critical friend involves providing constructive feedback and encouraging reflective practice. This article argues how AI can effectively replicate this role by engaging users in meaningful dialogues, challenging assumptions, and prompting deeper analysis of methodologies and outcomes.
